RFID completes first term across all SWWHEP libraries
The largest element of the Virtual Academic Library project – RFID issue, return and stock control – has now been live in all six libraries of the SWWHEP partnership since the beginning of this academic year.
Having implemented RFID self-service at two libraries in time for the beginning of the 2008/09 academic year, the next site – Swansea Metropolitan’s Owen library at Mount Pleasant – went live during the 2009 Easter vacation, and the remaining three sites were implemented during the summer vacation, ending with Swansea University’s Library and Information Centre, where over 750,000 items had to be prepared for RFID over the previous twelve months.
User’s response to RFID has been positive, and there has been an increase in the number of loans being made from the self-service units. The self-issue stations also allow for payment of fines by credit card, which is due to be implemented early in 2010.
