Blackboard announce commitment to Welsh Language across all three products in their Academic Suite
Blackboard announced at the recent Wales User Group meeting that from early 2010 they will be including support for Welsh across all three products in the Academic Suite and will continue to develop the Welsh language pack with no additional license costs to clients.
Over the past few years we have been able to use a language pack developed by Bangor University but this only translated part of the system and was limited always by the version of Blackboard that they were using. Blackboard will continue working with Bangor on the development but will be picking up all of the costs which we had previously thought would need to have been met by participating institutions.
This is a significant step by a major US based software company to recognise Welsh alongside other language groups – especially as there are currently some more widely spoken languages that they do not directly support. It now means that Welsh will become a selectable language for Blackboard users worldwide and so will potentially benefit Welsh speakers studying elsewhere.
Blackboard are of course the significant commercial partner to the SWWHEP eLearning project.
